Sponsorships making change

By: Michael J Miller Jr.

Glenda and I were surprised when we received a phone call from our sponsored children that they have won a certificate of excellence for their grades. Estefani Nicoll Quinonez has been in our “School Sponsorship” program for 5yrs. She has always maintained good grades through her years but this year in her 9th grade it was a little different. In the beginning of the year I promised her a scholarship with the ministry for her to attend a University when she graduated in 4yrs. I also told her to maintain her grades so she can win this scholarship. She was moved by this idea because her mother has been out of work for 1 yr. now. She lost her job because the company she worked for in sanding wood furniture moved to another country. So the importance of the scholarship now and for the future is very important. Estefani was awarded a medal and certificate for being #1 in her High school (over 600 students attending) with a GPA of 99%. Also Marlon and Carlos were award certificates of excellence for having a GPA of 97% (Marlon) and GPA of 96% (Carlos). Both are brothers and both live in a community that is very poor. If it weren’t for our sponsors, these children would have never studied because of their poverty stricken conditions. Now look at them. Youth that will succeed! Because of the huge amount of change the director has seen in his school by our program and how much time we take in making sure each student has their uniform, homework turned in, and attendance in check that the Director has invited us to be Sponsors of the 12th grade graduation. This means we will be written in the Department of Education books of history.
