Swing Report

Glenda and I have been praying for years for an opportunity to come and the funds needed to provide the children of Rincon and the Venezuela School a play ground. In January we received an extra donation to use towards the schools. We prayed and knew that this was an answered prayer. Our youth group on Saturday has grown to 80 plus children with only a soccer-basketball court, jump rope, coloring books and board games to play with. The kids were getting board with the same old and actually we were board in providing the same thing. We knew in our hearts the children love to climb, swing, and play. So I looked at the school and wondered where. On the other side of school building (grades 1-4) was an area that was abandoned and thought of as a waste of space. So I started to vision and dream in how to design a play ground. We then took the idea to the director of the school and the parents in the Barrio Rincon and they were excited to hear that their community will receive a play ground for the 1st time. So I and half of my youth group took two long days and put in a French drain to remove the water and a collection barrel to collect the water to use in the bathrooms when there isn’t any water in the school. We then moved by hand two dump truck loads of stone and leveled out the ground by excavating the ground and using the stone as well. Then we took 2’’ galvanized tubing and built the swings, see-saws and monkey bars. We dug holes and poured concrete to secure our tubes to the ground. We brought in a welder to weld all the joints and make sure it was secure. We painted everything in bright colors to brighten up the area. The children love the new play ground. Actually you can’t find hardly any kid under 13 in the soccer court now because they are all swinging and having fun. We also built a small 8’x4’ garden so the teachers and school kids can plant vegetables for the lunch program. There are still some more ideas swirling in our heads for this area, like a small house (open on the sides) for the girls to play dolls etc. We would like to add a couple more gardens as well to produce more food for the lunch program. A dream completed.
